ASCE/ETS MOP Guidance to Drilled Shaft Foundations - Planning, Design, Construction

Overview

This workshop will apply the contents of the forthcoming ASCE/ETS Manual of Practice (MOP) on ‘Design of Overhead Power Line and Substation Foundations’ to drilled shaft foundations. The workshop will cover various stages of planning, design, and construction of laterally loaded drilled shaft foundations, including an example problem of drilled shaft design under various considerations.

Topics Covered

  • Introduction: A high-level overview of the MOP and workshop speakers.
  • Drilled Shaft Foundations: A step-by-step process, illustrated by a flow diagram, covering the planning, design, and construction phases.
  • Geotechnical Exploration and Design Parameters: Discussion of geotechnical exploration methods, development of design parameters, design loads for drilled shaft foundation.
  • Drilled Shaft Foundation Depth Determination:
    • Strength Criteria: Exploration of design capacity models, RBD theories, and the LRFD approach.
    • Threshold Criteria: Guidelines for determining threshold criteria.
    • Special Considerations: Discussion of special factors to consider in design.
  • Construction: Overview of construction considerations and integrity testing options for drilled shafts.
  • Q&A: Opportunity for attendees to ask questions and seek clarification.

Presentation #4: This presentation will cover changes to the short circuit provisions in ASCE 113-23 and IEEE 605-2024 as well as changes to the anchorage provisions in ASCE 113-23. Short circuit forces are a grey area between electrical and structural disciplines that are often not well understood. ASCE 113-23 fleshed out short circuit forces more than the previous edition and an appendix was added to discuss short circuit force background. This presentation will highlight this background information and the changes in ASCE 113-23 and IEEE 605-2024. Additionally, anchorage design provisions were updated in ASCE 113-23 to include bending affects for all baseplate standoff heights. This is a significant design change that may or may not greatly affect actual designs. This presentation will cover the reasoning for the changes and discuss the effects on a selection of actual anchorage designs.
